What is this?

This site uses the Spanish Instituto Nacional de Estadística's Apellidos y nombres más frecuentes dataset to calculate and rank the most "statistically gender-neutral" given names among residents of Spain.

Names are ranked by how close they are to a perfect 50/50 split between female and male records. Since there are many composite forenames in Spain, there are also options to either treat such names as single units, or to show statistics for their different components separately.

As of 2024, when the data used in this site was last updated, name data is only provided by the INE with binary gender classifiers, which is why those are the only two categories appearing here. Non-binary gender classifiers would be helpful information, but are not available.

Advanced search

The filter functionality also supports searching by regex. Regex mode is enabled by surrounding a query in slashes, like /this/.

Try it out by searching for /son$/, which shows names ending in -son.
